What SWM is

The waste flow in one picture, the three ways to use SWM, and who does what.

SWM records how solid waste moves through a Block: from households and shops, through the SWM and PWM units, to the partners who take the processed waste. Each person records their own part of the work, and the Block office sees the whole picture.

How SWM is organised

  • A Block is the area one Block office runs. It has Gram Panchayats (GPs), and each GP has wards.
  • Facilities are where waste is handled. An SWM unit receives waste from GPs and sorts it. A PWM unit processes plastic and dry waste from one or more SWM units.
  • SHGs (self-help groups) collect waste and often run the SWM units. Their members are recorded in SWM.
  • Staff are the people who sign in. Each has one or more roles, each for a place: a GP, a facility or the whole Block. See Who can do what.

About the pictures

The screenshots in this guide come from a made-up Block, Sabujpur, with made-up people. Your Block's screens look the same but show your own GPs, facilities and people.
